Isol8 Li

Lithium Solution: 10,000 mg/L

3D Isol8 Li 60 mL.png

Parameter

  • Lithium

Value

10,000 mg/L

Characteristics

  • Provides lithium, the minor ion present in the greatest abundance in natural seawater which exhibits a nutrient-type depletion profile in recirculating marine ecosystems.

  • Lithium is depleted through uptake by phytoplankton and other primary producers, and through incorporation into aragonite.

  • Active Components: Lithium chloride, USP.

Basic Application

  • 1 drop (0.05 mL) per 0.74 gallons (2.82 L), or 1 mL per 14.88 gallons (56.31 L), provides NSW [Li], provides reference standard 1.78 µg/L (S=35, T=77°F).

  • 1 mL per 26.4 gallons (100 L) increases [Li] by 100 µg/L.

  • Apply in conjunction with routine ICP analysis.

Purchasing Options

Reef Blueprint (packaged in sizes suited to systems ≤500 gallons)

Captiv8 Aquaculture (larger systems, commercial, academic, research, zoological)

Application

Keep out of reach of children and unauthorized persons.  Avoid contact with skin, eyes, and mucous membranes. Store in a cool, dry location away from sunlight.

Lithium is a member of the alkali metals family of elements, which includes (along with Li) sodium, potassium, rubidium, caesium, and francium.  Of the minor elements exhibiting nutrient-type depletion profiles in recirculating marine ecosystems, Lithium is present in natural seawater at the highest concentration, followed by Rb, I, Ba, and Mo, respectively.  Potential mechanisms for lithium depletion include, but are not limited to, uptake by phytoplankton and other primary producers (including zooxanthellae), and incorporation into zooplankton tests and calcareous minerals, including aragonite (both biogenic and authigenic).  Whether the depletion occurs inadvertently, as a result of competition for other ions with similar characteristics of charge and radius, or is a result of intentional uptake and/or complexation, is likely circumstantial, e.g. influenced by a variety of factors in a continual state of flux in marine ecosystems, of which the specific ionic profile of the system likely plays the largest role.  Due to the largely unpredictable extent to which lithium plays a role in biochemical reactions taking place within the marine environment, the primary purpose of establishing and maintaining the standardized value of Li within a recirculating marine ecosystem is to achieve a greater degree of similarity to natural seawater, enabling the ion to remain available for uptake as necessary.
